I am going to sell my laptop to a friend and I want to reformat it so it is as close to new as possible. When I put in the windows XP disc that came with the computer it asked for the product ID key which I could not find anywhere. It is an HP Laptop that I bought about 6 months ago.

Hold it!! Before you try to format that drive, download "Belarc Advisor" (Free) run it view the page and print it. It will tell you the key code for your computer. It also tells you a lot of other information about your computer that you may need if you ever have a major problem. The key-code should be on a sticker attached to the computer's case somewhere or in with the disc. If you cannot locate it, go to newegg.com and spend $90 for an issue of Windows XP Home.

Oopsie! I would contact Uncle Billy's finest on that one. You don't want to reformat it without the key or it will not run. Er, Unless you put Linux on it, but never mind. That would be silly, wouldn't it?
