The Greece was a very hilly which provided a natural inclination for them to gather into city states instead of large kingdoms with I believe is a acropolis in the center where they can meet and gather in assemblies. This structure of society allowed many of the city-states to practice a form of democracy/aristocracy where the people voted on issues in government. The unusual coastline allowed more coast than a straight-line coastline. With more coastline more Greek city-states bordered the sea and they became adept to seafaring in the Mediterranean sea and trade with other Greeks by sea where land trade is inconvenient due to terrain. This also brought them in contact with the Egyptians, Persians, etc and allowed Greek colonization of Mediterranean sea's bordering lands.
