Once they start, there is no real way to stop them. The most definite way is to change your email address and do not forward mail from the old address to the new one. Don't sign up for anything on any website. Don't reply for them to remove your name from their list. Just keep reporting them as spam. I wish there were a way to eliminate spam, but I am not sure there is.

I use the Thunderbird e-mail client. It is free.

It has spam filters that analyze spam you mark and uses what it learns to block future spam.

I used it with an account that was receiving 60 - 100 spams a day. After a couple weeks, it was only letting about 5 a day get through. I have never had a genuine e-mail misclassified as spam.

There are some very good suggestions for dealing with spam above, BUT you will never stop spam till the (insert bad word of your choice here) people who send it are stopped. Personally I would hold public executions for them.
Yes you get more spam when you sign up at some sites, you need to read their privacy policies first.
Spam is also created with the spammers using computers, sometimes other peoples computers (called zombies) which have been taken over by spyware or hacked in to and they generate random e-mails addresses and send it out. so what if it generates a million e-mail addresses and only 1% are real. they don't have to do anything but sit and let the computers do the dirty work for them.
All they do is slow up the net and make us waste our time. In my opinion THEY MUST DIE!!!

FYI; Bill Gates gets over 4 Million e-mails a day. His e-mail filter is a very large staff of humans.

Do a Google or Yahoo search. "How to stop Spam". You can also to the the FTC.gov and they have good info to stop it.

As long as you keep doing the things that give the spammers your email address you will never stop it. The reason you get spam is because of you and what you do. Yahoo can do little to stop spam if you don't do what you need to do first.

Using the "Block Addresses" Feature of Yahoo Mail -

Some spammers will use a different email alias everytime, but always with the same domain name.

ex. "lffh@soandso.com" or "sadfv@soandso.com"
-----------------------------------------------------------------
To block address using domain name...

Step 1) Go to "Options" tab
Step 2) click "Block Addresses"
Step 3) Type domain name "soandso.com"
Step 4) click "Add Block"
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Using the "Filters" Feature of Yahoo Mail -

Some spammers are more clever and will use more than one domain name and/or email alias to avoid being blocked.

Search the "Body" of the emails to see if they always include certain phrases, words, or names.

Such as, "today is your day" or "Bill gave me your name"

Example Rule #1

* Body:
* contains
* today is your day
* match case

Example Rule #2

* Body:
* contains
* Bill gave me your name
* match case
-----------------------------------------------------------------
To filter emails using rules, do the following:

Step 1) Go to "Options" tab
Step 2) click "Filters"
Step 3) Click "Add filter"
Step 4) Choose email section most appropriate for rule
- From header:
- To/Cc header:
- Subject:
- Body:
Step 5) Use drop-list to specify filtering method
- contains
- does not contain
- begins with
- ends with
- match case
Step 6) Then Move the message to: Trash folder
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps.
