Hey AnswerBot. This must be in response to my question about "immigrating" (vs emigrating-check Webster's) to "America." I posted some follow up info on my question but, if you didn't go back to look at it, I will explain it here as well. Technically, yes, everyone that lives from Canada to the tip of Chile can be defined as being a North American, South American, Latin American, etc.; in that sense, they are all "Americans." However, people living in the U.S. are not trying to be conceited when they refer only to themselves as Americans. We live in the only nation on either hemisphere that actually uses the word "America" in the name of our country and that is why we alone are referred to as Americans. People from everywhere else across the globe also derive the names of their nationalities based on the names of their countries- ie Mexico=Mexicans; Canada=Canadians; France=French;China=Chinese;etc;etc. Without trying to sound like a jerk, I'm just curious as to what other possible name could people that live in the United States of America refer to themselves to distinguish themselves from those living elsewhere in either North or South America? One other thing to consider, I live about a mile from the US/Canadian (not the US American/Canadian American) border and I can tell you from experience many Canadians are offended when they are called or are mistaken for Americans- they certainly aren't offended by not be considered "Americans" and are actually offeneded when they are. I've also been to Canada, many places in Mexico, and Costa Rica and, not once, have I ever heard any person from any of these places refer to themselves as Americans but rather as members of their nationalities. By the way, who actually DID when the Mexican election (sounds like a Gore/Bush scenario)? In addition, you made some good points about immigrants(not emigrants) in the US actually having more appreciation for their rights than most Americans who were born there and, thus, take these rights for granted.

Not up here in Ruperts land my fine Americano. The line stops when you get to the Great White North, Canada. We're Canadians, and some of us are French Canadians. I hope this helps, have a great day eh!

Technically, yes we are all American. Over time the term American has come to mean someone from the United States of America. It's a shortened form of the proper name.

Why is this cry to be accepted as 'Americans'? Is there a secret desire to belong to America?
Ask any one other than the one from USA. They are Bolivians, Mexicans, Brazilians, etc... Not Americans.
Don't pose questions for which you already have an answer. This is not an innocent question.

because the name of the US is United States of America, that we are called Americans, and it is not meant to be a disrespect towards others who live on the North and South American continents. We are not called United Statians, we are called Americans and it should not be a point of discontent
