I loved Sledge Hammer, Danger Theater [sic], and Police Squad, all of which only lasted a couple of series despite the fact that Police Squad became the ever-popular Naked Gun film series. Meanwhile cr*p like Diff'rent Strokes and the Cosby Show went on forever with their unfunny childish rubbish. Even Happy Days went on 80% too long. I mean, I ask you, would somebody as arrogant as the Fonz ever consider going out with a bird with somebody elses kid?

Happy Days coined the expression ' jumping the shark' so I can't argue with you on that one.

A lot of programs do run for too long and like Firefly some just don't get given the chance they deserve.

You have to remember that TV programs are only there to get you watching the adverts that are scattered amongst them. If you belong to a demographic that doesn't draw much advertising focus then your programs get canned!

If the ratings are good the shows stay on are, but not in all cases.
I think a lot of shows don't want to go on "too long" as they have seen some shows make that mistake and actors don't want to be type cast.

I mean a few weeks ago i was watching Blossom on Trouble and David Schwimer played Six's older boyfriend but to us he was "Ross from Friends" Yes Blossom was way before Friend time.

They may decide to end it while they are on top and the producers are still making money and actors not too big for their boots. lots of sitcoms have kids who grow up and actors who want to do movies not TV and their is some contract which do not allow both

For some reason over there in america it seems more like what the producers and executives with all the power and money seem to want to watch not the viewing public and that is why american tv is such cr£p , it all seems to be highly glossy ( you have to be dumb to like it) rubbish you are forced to watch instead of shows and programmes that will make you genuinely laugh without feeling stupid, or dumbing themselves down as though the producers are appealing to a country of morons instead of the clever people you really are( once you are allowed to behave and act in a sophisticated and real way) , get rid of the overly sweet (everything has to have a moral approach) and you are home dry. everyone likes to see the dysfunctional side of things because it is genuinely comical such as sledgehammer danger theatre and police squad and so forth. And also great entertainment for us the brits yyaaayy.

and serranna 99 i also dont know why firefly didnt make it???????????? who in their right minds cancelled that gold mine????

because there has no longer been a witty genuine sitcom in view that Archie Bunker did "All contained in the kin". They been crap. Yer 30 rock and Arrested progression I evaluate crap. call it the "Dumbing of usa of america" or what ever you want yet comedy is now no longer as humorous to me. Leno and Letterman at the instantaneous are not 0.5 as humorous as Carson became. i'm no a lot less smart yet comics like Jerry Sinefeld genuinely are a lot less resourceful than George Burns and Gracie Allen. leap a era to bill Cosby and George Carlin. nevertheless humorous. U proper about the canned laughter. That what incorrect with sitcoms and maximum all television in the present day, they attempt to fabricate your thoughts for you. I watch each of the finest shows and not in any respect one has captured my activity in 20 years in sitcoms. The humorous comics do no longer do sitcoms any extra. per chance on cable yet no longer on community television.

Because they cancel them when they are still good and popular before people start tuning out, that way people will remember the programme for being good rather then a show that is boring and overplayed. (no new and clever ideas to add to the show that could keep up the ratings)

because the viewing figures drop, and advertisers wont have their adverts in the breaks because not enough people will see it.. It's purely a financial consideration, doesn't matter how good the program is, if their aren't enough viewers, out it goes

because something YOU may think is one of the greatest sitcoms ever might not seem the same to the majority of Americans.
