all the popular female singers lke Mariah carrey, Madonna, jlo, britney et al seem to be oozing with sex. how much credit to their voice, and would you still like to hear them, if they were not so sexy? why male singers can gain popularity irrespective of their looks? like Eric clapton for example? plin, spectacle- wearing, no funky accessories? how would you explain this?

It shouldn't make a difference. It depends on the listener. Men listen more with their eyes (not that you can do so) and women more so with their ears. In the old days before TV and pictures in the paper and cameras; people were heard on the radio and all the people listened with their ears. I think all singers should be listened to with the ears first before they are seen. But instead we see them in next to nothing and doing all kinds of gyrations; mainly provocative ones.

Eric Clapton is a bad example because he has been around for years, since the late 60's; but, yes, we sell sex and looks now days. They even told the bassist for Motley Crue to lose some weight once before they put out an album.
Sometimes people will make it without looks; but even in the 70's looks sometimes counted. Pat Benatar, the Wilson sisters (heart).

But we live in a video world now, and video is all about looks. Remember the video for Blues Traveller and Runaround, the band played other people in the video and the band in the video was not the actual band.

It's because most female singers are very sexy, and attractive, so when an obese singer comes along, no one really likes her because she is not like the rest of the crowd. For example, on American Idol, Rubin won regardless of his appearence and he did have an excellent voice! But Mendisa got out pretty early because she was a female, obese person, and she DID HAVE such a glorious voice! I don't judge the singers if they are wearing Chanel or if they have a nice body, I judge them on their talents as a singer or an actress. But, most people do this to females not because the males are crazy for good looks, but because that they are so used to having female celebs that look like Beyonce and all that, so when obese, nerdy, people come along they get teased.

Good luck!

Picard nailed it.

Since the advent of Mtv, talented people who aren't gorgeous don't stand a chance.

Ever seen Janice Joplin? Ugh.

yep! MTV changed the definition of female pop singer. Now, even Paris hilton (:O) can make an album that is in the top ten even tho it sounds horrible.
