In Soccer the clock keeps running all the time so when there is a foul or penalty or what not they have to make up time for when the game was interupted. so at the end of each half they will have stoppage time which is usually a few minutes of make up time.

Stoppage time is time that is added on to the end of the play due to goal celebrations, injuries, fouls, etc.
Because the clock never stops, whenever there is a delay in the game, the referee keeps track of all the time lost (or wasted). That time is then added on. This prevents teams from using delay tactics (long goal celebrations during a tight game, faking an injury, goalie holding on to the ball too long, taking too long to set up corners or free kicks to name a few examples).
As you may already know, there is a 4th official outside of the field..he's the one who plays the role as timekeeper..so at the end of each half,he will tell everybody how much stoppage time will be played(usually via board which is used for substitution).. The time varies - depending on time lost during the specific matchs.

Why is there a stoppage time system in soccer?

The non-technical answer:
The game of soccer is supposed to be non-stop and flowing. This is one of the reasons that soccer is called "The beautiful game" by many people around the world. The players and fans don't want the game to be interrupted for any reason and thus the clock doesn't stop unless the match is called off. This allows for several things, including a fairly consistent match length. A soccer game will almost always last for 1 hour and 45 minutes. There are two 45 minute halves and a 15 minute half-time.

The technical reason:
FIFA, the international governing body for soccer, declares it to be the case. According to their laws of the game, stoppage time is added for the following reasons:
* substitution(s);

* assessment of injury to players;

* removal of injured players from the field of play for treatment;

* wasting time;

* any other cause.

* The allowance for time lost is at the discretion of the referee.

stopage time is a specific time added after a normal time in a football match....normal time is pre-determined time that is 45 mins of two halves and 2 other halves of extra time if required,15 mins of each........i hope u know what the extra time is for....and the stopage time is provided to compensate the time lost during the game when there is a free kick to be taken or throw in or any other event which tends to stop the game

At the end of the first and second half (both regular 45' and extra-time 15') The number of minutes allowed for time lost is decided by referee only, and depends from:
1. substitutions (replacements)
2. time lost to control the actual state of an injured player
3. time lost to deliver an injured player out of field
4. teams actions to waste time
5. other
There isn't a specific rule, is the referee to decide those amount.

The time used up when someone is injured or after a goal is scored is recorded. This time is added on to each half to make up a full 45 minutes of actual play.

It's time to make up for the number of penalties, injuries, etc that stopped the game earlier. So the teams get to play for the entire game instead of like 80 minutes due to penalties.. get it??
