They didn't have tampons and pads back then, did they just bleed all over the place or something?

It is gross, but they used rags, washed them and reused them. Hence the term for menstration is "ragging it or on the rag" Crude, but true.

As it was told to me; Native American women would go into a tent and sit during their menstal cycle. They would let the blood flow back into the earth, it was their way of giving back to mother nature.

They used reusable cloth pads made of cotton (often organic), terrycloth, or flannel. They were also handsewn (from material or reused old clothes and towels) or storebought.
