1. Because they actually plays other sports. We all play since childhood. The first sport a children is playing all over the world is football, in USA it's basket or baseball or their own helmet-rugby.
2. Team sports needs lot of players, training, tactics, schemes, skillful players, sponsor, lot of ticket-paying supporters. You need many years to reach great levels.
3. USA FIFA ranking isn't definitively their real ranking. See at the link how FIFA proceeds to calculate ranking points. You can easily figure out USA-Panama is quite different than Germany-France... Pick only this: a UEFA match is deserved by FIFA a "Regional strenght factor" x1.00, a CONCACAF match is x0.94...
4. USA are amazing over-confident in their teams. At Olympics games USA earned 3th place in basket having so far the best world players. In football they're a 'minor' team, having them pulled from competition in early stage1 was a normal thing to world's eyes, but I read in this section lot of supporter blaming referees...

As a whole, most Americans find the game boring and too slow to keep our attention as fans. Americans play and chose sports mainly based on the ones they like to watch and soccer had to compete with countless others...unlike other parts of the world where soccer is the only game in town. Soccer is slow and there is not alot of scoring (Americans are all about scoring) and our miniscule attention spans just can't sit still long enough for it.

Good question, but I ask why can't Canadians play soccer? I think it is greedy to want to play soccer. I mean, we, as North Americans have many sports like., basketball, hockey, Nascar and Cascar, indy five hundred, baseball, batementen, tennis, squash, rugby, shooting sports, sport fishing, proffessional running, boxing, karate, proffessional swimming, long jump, hurdeling, disc toss, curling, pool.,etc, etc.

Out of all these sports and much more you can't find one thing that you like to do. If you really want to play soccer then go ahead but, we, North Americans doen't have to rule over every game. Let Europe and the other countries ejoy their soccer, thats really like all they have as proffessional sports. Why do you think that the worlds best soccer player is from London, England. They don't have football. In fact the Englanders think that North American football is stupid and foolish because its a bunch of growen men hitten each other running around in circles for a ball, as an english man once put it. You and myself know differently but still, let them have their fun and find something else to amuze your time.

I believe alot of the reason why the USA sucks at pro soccer is all about the money. If you notice most kids play soccer in this country but for the great athlethes when they get older the other sports are much more lucrative. The NFL MLB and NBA players earn millions of dollars as we all know but how much does a MLS player make (not sure but I know its nothing compared to the big 3). I think its just like everything else in this country, until the MLS and indoor soccer can catch up in paying its players the truely great athlethes are going to go where the money and fame is.
