It's a big question so I'll just say a little about my recent experience. I have just come back from a year in Uzbekistan, which is a desert climate with a short cold (snow for 1 month) winter. There's less of everything there compared to here in the U. K. Far fewer species of birds, plants, mammals, insects - the whole place is sort of empty. Next I am off to Uganda, and I have a feeling that I'll find more of everything there.
