It means your alternator is not producing enough power, and your car is running off the battery.
Check your fan belt and insure its tight
Make sure your air conditioner isnt kicking on and stopping the belt
make sure there is no oil on the belt
If all those seem fine, take the alternator into autozone and they will test it for you.
if its failed or borderline, replace it with a new one, I would reccommend a low RPM alternator, they cost a whopping 10 more dollars than the 70 dollar ones, and actually charge your battery while your car idles, instead of just barely producing enough power to replace what the ignition system uses.

most likely loose belt or bad ground if it is a newer car it may be controlled by the computer grounds are important a good mechanic can also test for bad diodes
note never hook up jumper cables with your engine running it can cause your alternator to fail
