Norton used to be the best choice but now-a-days its to heavy. Norton 2006 is a nightmare on system resources.
There are several good suites, like mccaffee and others, but personally I recommend Kaspersky Labs 6. For extra protection use the Internet Security version (not just antivirus). Kaspersky solutions are very lightweight on system resources but works great, even stops virus where norton fails... (there are alot of tech forums about this, just look around in the internet). Also, the kaspersky antivirus keeps permanently updated.
As for adware and stuff I'd say you can use not so effective but free product as Lavasoft's Adaware Personal. If you want a real protection then I'd say to look around for some other software like bulletproofs anti-spyware program (I'm missing the progam name at the momment).
For extra security set up a firewall... you got several good suites like Outpost, Kerio, Kaspersky Antihacker.... etc etc...
If you are looking for a all in one bundle then maybe I'd say go for the Mccaffee suite... although I havent personally tested it.

Antivirus - Avast!4 Home edition
Firewall - Zonealarm Free edition
Antispyware - Spybot Search & Destroy
- Spywareblaster
- Windows Defender
- Adaware
- Ewido
You only need one firewall and one antivirus product; the two I mentioned seem to work fine together. As for spyware, you can safely use Spybot (which has resident protection) along side Spywareblaster, which blocks bad sites both in internet explorer and firefox. After that it's your choice. Some swear by Windows defender, others by Adaware. Personally I find both a little lacklustre. Ewido is interesting and may provide extra protection; works well as an on-demand scanner too.
For serious protection you have to pay! But never NEVER buy anything from NORTON or SYMANTEC.

I have, and will recommend to everyone out there to get "Norton Internet Security".
It's a package that comes with the best tools to protect your computer from spyware, virii, trojans, and just about anything else harmful to your computer, obtained through surfin' the web!!
In combination with this I also recommend downloading "stinger" and "spybot - search & destroy," (free downloads). These three programs/packages combined with frequent scandisks, and regular defragmentation of your hard drives will keep your computer not only clean, but running much faster as well...
Hope this helps!

go to www.trendmicro.com and download the pc-cillin internet security suite. install it and run it, congigure it to your prefered settings allow it to update on 6 hourly schedule preferably as this will enhance your system security still further. you need to also with any firewall set up a BLOCK to block ICMP AND ICMPv6 INCOMING AND OUTGOING THAT MEANS ADDING A TOTAL OF 4 EXCEPTIONS TO THE FIREWALLS SETTINGS.
YOU THEN NEED TO GO TO www.grc.com and run there security testing program. if the test reveal any weakness in your firewall amend the firewall as needed and re-test.
I've used Norton for years however I'm trialing windows VISTA x64 and the product from trend micro is currently the only anti-virus and total security package available on this operating system.
the beauty of pc-cillin is the ability to filter 100% the web you want. for example you can block the entire internet but allow just a few of your favourite sites as exceptions.
If your a parent you may prefer to block a one or more of a list of pre-defind categories from the list provided.
the user interface is easy to use and it works perfectly in my experiance.
you can even custom filter your Wi-Fi network so only authorised computers (MAC addresses) are allowed on. you get to see a list of devices attempting or that have connected to your network you can then if you know the device set to TRUST the device; alternatively if the device is unrecognised then set the system to not trust that device and hey presto the device is kicked off the network. if you make a mistake in which device to trust nd which not to trust you simply repeat the process.
you can even password protect the program to stop unwanted configuration changes.
it is easily the best all around solution to internet security and the best value for money i've seen in quite some time.
so download the trial trust me you will not regret it.

I've had lots of problems with Norton (on my laptop.) Currently, it captured a trojan horse, but is stuck on the info box and I can't find any way to get it off (I've tried everything!) Most pc techs I've talked to DO NOT recommend Norton.
We use PC-Cillin on our office computers and no problems at all with it. We also use Spy Sweeper, Ad-Aware and Spybot (all free) on a weekly basis and C-Cleaner as needed.

Spybot Search and Destroy. it's a free download. If you need a good firewall Zone Alarm is also free. You can get them at www.komando.com (you can do a search for (Kim Komando). I use them both along with the free AVG anti-virus software.
