I am very VERY proud of my heritage (Irish) I was born and raised in the US. Okay so, my question is this, do Irish folks FROM Ireland consider us American born Irish as equals? Just curious because I read a lot of questions on here from people from Ireland, England etc that sound to me like there is NO respect for Americans, Irish lineage of not on that side of the pond?

Actually to clarify, both of my parents were BORN in Ireland. I guess this was a pointless question to ask because no matter what anyone says in my heart I am Irish AND American. Besides the ignorance on both sides of the line, I am proud to be BOTH

It's not that we have no respect for Americans, it's just that according to us, we are Irish(becuase we were born here) and you are Americans with Irish roots, but we don't consider you as Irish. I used to work in a tourist area in Ireland that attracted a lot of Americans, and they did fully believe that they were 100% Irish, and also claimed some weird lines of heritage, a fellow worker was told by an American that her family was descended from leprauchans(not possible, becuase these are a work of fiction, they dont really exist), another American told us that she was the great great great grandchild of Michael Collins,(the man who helped Ireland gain independence from Britian),when in fact he died aged 30, unmarried and with no children. It's these sort of claims from Americans that the Irish find amusing, it's not that we have no respect, it's just that we get a good laugh out if it. But honestly, if your great great grandfather was Irish, it doesnt mean you are Irish, I was born in Dublin, to Irish parents and I have lived in Ireland all my life, Im Irish

If your from Ireland, and someone from the U.S (a yank)tells you they are Irish, you get really furious. They feel as though you have bailed on the whole, we-suffered-and-so-should-you craze, like the potato famine, and all the lovely English oppression suffered through all the years. It is as though you wish to use the name, but not suffer to hold it.
My family is from Ireland, on mum's side.

I took a trip back to the Old Sod. They tolerated me, but I wasn't really Irish in their eyes.
