You are usually not barred from getting a checking account unless you have previously had an account closed because of writting bad checks and not paying them off. If that is the case, then the only way is to pay off the charges at that bank. They will work with you on this. If you have not defaulted on an account and still can not get an account then go to other banks. If all else fails open a savings account and establish a relasionship with the bank first, after some amount of time they may open an account for you.

I don't think you need to have a credit check when you open a checking account, but I am not sure, never thought about it. But usually they want you to have like 100 dollars more or less to open one. (Usually it's 100 dollars though). You just need to have that to start it and some accounts, if you go below 100 dollars, they will take out two to five dollars out a month, depending if the account is free or not. Hope this helps.

Some banks will give you a checking account if you put money into a saving account and you put it up for collateral. You will not be able to use the money until a specified time period.

If you know someone who is a member of a credit union then you should be able to join under them, give it a shot if that option is available.
