She ran out of fuel searching for the island she was planning to land on. She apparently sighted the wrong ship mid way that led her to be off course. Headwind and the need to climb over weather cost her the additional fuel that would have brought her to success in her search. She was probably within minutes of actually sighting the island when she had to ditch.

there was a program on telly about her which explained what happend.. they went to an island and found a bit of a plane, some material from clothing, and a heel from a boot, they said it was made around the same time as when amilia Erhart was a live...

she was lost. she was flying a plane and then she never returned. people assumed she crashed in an ocean, but as far as i know, it is still a mystery
