I worked at NASA for 6.5 years. There are many career paths (I kind of stumbled into it, w/ chemistry degrees).
The NASA people I know are great folks. They work hard as an organization, and want to do great things (except for the Earth Sciences directorate. Stay away from them).

Engineering is good, aeronautical is alright, but not essential.

I have seen a HUGE demand for optics and opto-mechanical engineers. I would highly recommend this if it fits your skills. Even if your interest in NASA wanes, this is a lucrative career.

Knowing details about astronomy and/or planetary science is good. You'll appreciate the missions and understand NASA terminology more quickly.

The final tip: NETWORK! NASA has a variety of co-op programs, at various centers. Pursue those. Be polite, but don't be shy. NASA employees are human, and they like to help young people interested in the field.
Keep abreast of NASA's roadmap for missions (see link below). You'll be able to talk about specifics when you contact NASA.

IMO you will have a better chance at working for NASA as an electrical engineer. Specialize in RF, communications, optics, or systems.
