Yes, the quality of food you eat affects the quality of milk you produce. Eat right or feed your baby formula.

The quality of your milk depends *only* on the overall quality of your diet over the last 5 or more years. What you eat on a day-to-day basis will *not* affect the nutrients in your milk. This has been clearly shown in research. Unless you have had a truly *horrendous* diet for many years, your baby will be fine. Do *not* fall for those old wive's tales that you need to eat perfectly every day or your baby will suffer. Women who have been living under starvation conditions for their entire lives will almost *always* produce high quality milk.

On the other hand, *you* will suffer if you eat only fruit. And you probably won't lose much weight, either...

If you want to lose weight, please read _Eat Well, Lose Weight While Breastfeeding_ by Eileen Behan, R.D. It is written by an expert in the field (a registered dietician) and contains lots of useful nutritional information--even for women who *aren't* nursing and *aren't* trying to lose weight.

And you *shouldn't* wean your baby. You will put your baby at risk by doing so... I know my answer is in the minority here. But, you will notice everyone else is expressing *opinions* based on assumptions. Read the Web site and book I referenced, and you will get demonstrable *facts*.

I nurse my nine month old and also nursed my daughter until she was 12 months old. It is important for you to eat a blanced diet with protein, grains, dairy products, vegetables and fruit. I can understand your desire to lose weight but it isn't healthy for your body to lose weight by only eating fruit whether you are nursing or not. It is OK to reduce your calorie intake some in order to try to lose weight but you need to eat from all of the food groups. The quality of your milk does depend on the quality of your food. Nursing is very good for your baby so I would recommend that you continue to nurse, just eat better. You could try to exercise to help you lose weight. Taking the baby for a walk is good exercise. I do aerobics to lose weight. The book What to Expect When You're Expecting has good nutritional guidance for the mother that you can continue to use after the baby is born. What to Expect The First Year has good advice for nutrition for your baby. In that book, it says that too much fruit or juice can cause runny stools, which I think is the laxiity you refer to. Good luck!

Eating only fruit is not good for YOU, or the baby. Lots of fruit can make your milk very acidic and that can make the baby's tummy upset. And all that fruit can upset your digestion too.

When you are making milk, your body uses many more calories than normally, so eating a good diet yourself will not make you gain weight.

If you are worried about your diet, and how it affects your baby, ask your doctor to give you a proper diet to follow, a diet that will allow you to make sufficient milk for your baby, and will not make your health suffer.

Quality of the food you are eating or not eating can effect breast milk. contact your doctor, midwife or la leche league for more info. The hospital where you gave birth probably has breast feeding clinics where you can talk to the nurses - call them.
You can loose weight and breastfeed at the same time but you need to be smart about it. If you reduce your calories too much you could dry up.

your baby is getting it's nutrients from you...meaning your breastmilk.
you should not be dieting right now!!! you should be eating your regular healthy diet like you were when pregnant.
imagine that you are still pregnant and everyhting going into your body is going straight to your baby.

i don't think you should stop nursing your little one...i think you should start eating better to give you baby better nutrition!

the weight gain you can worry about later..o.k.?

take care.

I agree with previous answers. Eat good food. Keep yourself and your baby healthy and strong. You'll take off weight once baby is running around. If not, its better to diet then than now.

What you eat is what your baby eats.
This is not the time to be on a diet.

your baby eats everything that goes into your body....YOU HAVE TO EAT AND BE VERY HEALTHY WHILE YOU ARE BREASTFEEDING. you have to eat better, or your baby isn't getting all the nutrients he/she needs. you shouldn't be concerned with how you look if you are breatfeeding...once you stop, then you can eat however you like.....if you eat 5 debbie cakes and 4 cokes...that's the same as feeding it straight to the baby
