The black discoloration on his tail looks as if it is eating away at his tail. It started out on one part of his tail and has now spread on to other parts of his tail. It is only on the very edge of his tail. Can anyone tell me what it is and how I can treat it??

Is the black still only on the fins? If its other places on the body then its probably ammonia burns which means your tank water could of killed your fish and still can. If its only on the fins then it may be ammonia burns and fin rot or just fin rot. Test your water make sure the ammonia and nitrite are zero and the nitrate is less then 40 but more then zero. No matter what you do to treat it isn't gonna help unless the water is safe. If it is fin rot you can add some salt, 1 tablespoon per 5 gallon, or just let the clean water heal it.

By the way, ich isn't black its white.

it seems ur goldfish has ick, its a disease fish get that can be treated, usually starts out like a black grain of salt sitting on ur fish. Petsupplies usually carries treatment for it. Fish will die if not treated.

It is definately not ich.

Your fish should be separated from your other fish, and given a treatment for fungus, which is available from any local fish store, or even many discount stores. This could very easily travel to your other fish, so keep him seperated until he is healthy again.
