The 4th is the day that Americans celebrate their freedom from England. We fought for our independence from England and King George IV due to his process of taxation without representation. The continental congress wanted to be represented in England on issues that dealt with America. When this was not allowed, they took a great deal of time to come up with an appropriate declaration to politically separate themselves from England. Independence was actually claimed on July 2 but the continental congress didn't sign it until the fourth. The majority of the representatives of the 13 colonies didn't actually sign the declaration until August 2nd. So be happy for your freedom to be an American and the ability to say Happy 4th of July.

On July4, 1776 the colonists in what was to become America, wrote King George of England a letter declaring their need to be independent of England. The letter came to be known as "The Declaration of Independence." Which led to the Revolutionary War and America's independence from England.

it's none of the above.
it's the day that the declaration of independence was ratified, meaning everyone signed it and it would go into effect.
