I used to have a program called LapLink that allowed me to do just that. It wasn't all that expensive, and worked great.
As for other means, I haven't tried making the connections with my Windows XP machines, but I couldn't get it to work with my 98's.
Adding some system information (processor, Operating System, etc.) will help people answer your question.

Not aware of any. What you need is called a Crossover Cable. It looks like a standard LAN cable, only the wires have been "crossed over" inside the cable. Normally you hook "send" to "send" and "recevie" to "receive". A cross over hooks "send" to "receive" so that the two PCs will talk.
You can find them at any electronic store (Best Buy, Circuit City, probably even Walmart). Should be in the $15 range.

Tecnically , NO. you cannot use a normal usb cable to connect 2 pc's.
however there are usb cables available here with built in networking cards that allow just that, ( i purchased one last summer for like 20$, and it worked like a charm....
rest i agree with other posters that you need a croosover cable to connect 2 pc's without a hub/switch
