Recently I've really started getting into jazz music (incidentally since I bought an ipod) and bought a few CDs like Wynton Marsalis, Brad Mehldau, Dave Brubeck and Horace Silver. I've always been musical, but don't really like modern popular music like most people my age (I'm in upper 6th). My parents think it's really strange and confusing that I'm into Jazz ''all of a sudden''... OK it's not really something usual for me to be interested in but surely there's nothing wrong with it?

P.S. I enjoy playing piano and jazz pieces and my piano teacher is from a Jazz family

Jazz is amazing!! How is that weird. I think Jazz music is so refreshing and cool and I'm around your age too... Would they prefer that you were into heavy metal? If you are musical and play the piano, its quite logical that you would be interested in listening to the type of music that you enjoy playing!

There is a really good artist called Abram Wilson- you should check him out! You can usually find his cd in HMV or somewhere like that!

Jazz is cool- its not weird that you like it lol! =) I would call my music tastes weird! I literally like every genre of music [apart from maybe country music] from heavy metal to classical!

There's definitely nothing wrong with being into jazz "all of a sudden"!

For many decades in the 20th century, jazz was associated with all sorts of things parents probably wouldn't want their kids to get involved with: gambling and prostitution in the 20s, organized crime in the 20s and 30s, and heroin addiction and alcoholism in the 40s and 50s. And, unfortunately, some people have a problem with the music's African American history.

Your parents are probably not thinking of any of these things, however. They may be concerned that your interest in jazz may subvert your "legitimate" classical studies. Maybe they're concerned that your peers are not likely to share this interest with you and that you'll have less in common with others your age.

None of these reasons are good reasons to not dig deeper into this music, though. Jazz is tremendously important to our culture, and it will only feed your imagination.

The best thing you should do is talk to your parents.

Its great! I listen to all forms of jazz (except big band and dixieland, though I like Louie Armstrong and Duke Ellington), blues, classic rock, some country. Its good to listen to a variety of genres. My favorite jazz people are Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, the Crusaders, Larry Carlton, Dave Brubeck, Django Reinhart, etc. Its really great someone your age is into jazz. What got me into jazz was playing guitar. I just loved guitar and wanted to hear the best guitarists in all genres. I tried to take a little from every music style as an influence.
Since you play piano, I highly recommend Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea.
My youngest daughter is your age and all she likes is hip hop. Its really cool to listen to jazz at your age. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Sounds to me like you've pretty much got it together for someone your age, and have simply developed an appreciation for a great form of music. I'm thinking it may be your parents who need the advice on how to chill out. You're in your formative years still, and while Jazz could be a phase or it could be the music you love from this point forward, your parents need to understand that this is the time for you tofind some more mature interests.
Enjoy the free flowin sounds of the Jazz masters. And congratulations on your newfound love for great tunes.

Honey there ain't nothing wrong with you listening to jazz. I think its better that you listen to jazz than listening to all the other "crap" that is on the radio today (sex, violence, drugs= no way). Jazz has been around since the 1930's and its a classic, most artist now a days get there inspiration from people who sang jazz and/or blues. So you can keep on listening to your jazz and don't worry about your parents or any other person thinks.

Sounds to me like you are well-rounded. If I was one of your parents, I'd be thrilled that you were into jazz. When I was in my late teens, I got very interested in the Big Band sound of the 30's and 40's. Don't worry, you're not weird.

I don't think so..maybe they're concerned about you spending money on a music form you "just" got into. But, if you really love it, go on ahead enjoying and don't worry about it.

Parents think their children are weird and we think they are weird!! There is nothing wrong with expanding your horizons, no matter what it is. Muse listen to classical music and they are a huge rock band.....you see my point??
