The same reason that these multi-millionaire players still have to share rooms when on international duty - to save money!
In the old days, before Football was such a money-making machine, the FAs of each country would send the team home immediately to save additional expense. This is no longer the case for many (not all) organisations, but there has never been a good enough reason to change the way things are done.
BTW, I am just guessing - I have no idea really ;-)

Because the national bodies don't want to pay out all that money for hotels, meals, drinks etc, and the players want to get back to wives and/or g/fs and perhaps get a holiday in before they have to start training for the next season. They'll do the same as the rest of us and watch any matches they may be interested in on the TV.

They would probably like to stay and watch the games but:
A) I guess their family want to have a short holiday before the next season starts and want to get away
B) They stay in expensive hotels paid for by FA and sponsors who will like to keep expenses limited so leave when they can.
When your holiday starts are you gonna stay and watch how your colleagues are doing their job?

Fifa has to pay for the players stayign in Germany!!! So it would be foolish to pay for those who got knock out of the world cup!
However they can stay at their expense!!! not fifa's expense!! a rich lad would stay and watch the final!!! but not all can do that!!!

Well you make a good point, you would think that the looser would stay watch a few matches and stuff and have some fun. Relax. But i think it's fifa rules.

I know what you mean.
It would be good if they did a Pro Bowl style 'best players' match for charity as part of the Finals Day events.

I think it has a bit more to do with the money. Although they have plenty the team fund pays for it and they cannot justify them staying on.

they have to return home so their respective countries can pay tribute to them for the good work they did and it's their chance to take a rest because the club leagues are starting soon
