Child support is used to suppliment your ex's income in a similar manner to where it would be if you still lived with her (or if you ever had lived with her). The idea behind it is that children are expensive, and a two income family has an increased ability to support a child (or children). If your child's mother has custody (or is the residential parent in a shared parenting agreement), then you will be responsible for child support. If you have custody, then no, she cannot file for support. If there is question as to what she plans to do, I suggest that you not give her any money directly (because anything that you give her without an order in place will be considered a gift and will not count towards your ultimate support), contact the department of job and family services and try to assertain what your payments could be, and prepare yourself to start out in the hole with child support. Almost all support is retroactive, meaning that on the date that it is ordered, it is ordered back to when you split up, moved out, or if you were never together, on the date the child was born.
Hope this helps.

What does one have to do with the other? A good father would not hesitate to provide support for their child. Why don't you go for primary custody and ask her for child support?

If she has more than 50% custody of the child, yes. Being a good father alone doesn't make it fair. If she is supporting your child more than 50% of the time, she deserves contribution to help take care of him/her.

If you are not paying child support she is suppose to. And you are suppose to be paying.
Part of the child custody agreement showing custody, visitation and of course child support is a normal agreement for a couple with a child not living together.
So of course you should as a good father be glad to pay your reasonable amount.

If you are not being financially responsible to your child, you are not being a good father. Get a job and provide for your child or you WILL end up in jail and have no license.
