This is a computer that has been working properly and connecting to the Internet for about three years now, same settings. There are two computers connecting via a cable/dsl router, and the other computer still connect to the Net without problems (I am using it now).

I have no clue what happened. All I can even think is that I had done routine Windows updates that day, and at some point I denied a file access to the Internet, as I didn't recognize it. A mistake, I guess. :(

I have tried resetting TCP/IP, and I have made sure it's there on the connection (1394) and enabled. I tried reconfiguring the entire network from scratch, and I tried a system restore from a week ago hoping I could bypass the problem that way. Automatic detection for IP settings is also a go. So far, no luck. Please help?

I noticed I didn't define the actual problem very well... I suddenly have no access to the Net whatsoever on that computer. It was working fine one minute, then not at all the next. Firefox and IE both do not function, IMs do not function, etc. It doesn't seem to "see" the connection anymore.

Edit: Holy weirdness. I restaerted the computer after changes (for about the 14th time now) and it came back up with a bridge that I didn't ask for. And still no connection. I deleted the bridge and switched the physical connection to another card. The computer rebooted itself with no prompt from me, and came back on with the connection intact. Wha? Computers baffle me sometimes. Anyway, seems ok for the time being... ! I think I'll leave this question up for a while in case it continues to give me trouble. Thanks! :)

AGGGH! It was working again for all of two minutes. By the time I got back to it, it decided not to work again. And now it won't even let me view the workgroup computers. This is a hair-puller.

Possible that the Network card is damaged. Look in Device Manager and see if the card is listed without a yellow ? mark. If you don't see it there then look a little lower in Other Devices.
If it is there then you may need to re-install the drivers.

are you sure the network card is still functioning ? what if you swap the router connection with the other pc ?

if the hardware is ok and the connection is listed in windows try disabling it and adding a new connection

also try uninstalling the tcp/ip stack and reinstalling it - through the properties of the connection

good luck

right click on lan in the network connections window and choose properties. Make sure TCP/IP is checked.

You have a connector malfunction. Oooh how frustrating that can be. You will have to put it on a diagnostic monitor. You will be able to purchase one in the future. You will be able to detect exact location for a huge chunk of change. http://gimmy.pitas.com/
