im getting two ferrets in a few months time and im planning on keeping them outside in a large, two storey, wooden rabbit hutch. would this be ok? bearing in mind that i live in the UK so its obviously not as hot as the USA climate (although it probably is today!) i will have a spare cage to bring them in during the day if the weather gets to hot, although my landlord won't allow them in the house all the time. Is there anyone who keeps there ferrets outside, in a large rabbit hutch, in the UK? any advice? tips?

This used to be how ferrets were kept before they became popular as indoor pets. Just make sure they have planty of toys and hiding places, try to build them a large outdoor run if you can.

Actually, you'll find that Most people, in UK, who've been around ferrets since before they became popular 'pets', in USA, keep their stock in cages *At Least* that size. Better still is an affair more akin to an aviery. Shade and fresh water and they'll be fine.

Check out the National Ferret Welfare Society site. They were run by and for 'Ferreters', when they kicked off. I hope to god the 'Nice Jumpers' brigade haven't since taken over .....

Feed them on road kill. Not sh*t out of a foil bag. They should live up to eight or nine years. Look up Polecats on google and see what it says they eat. Feed ye ferrets the same stuff and ye should get that life span out of them.

Incidently; Best book I ever read, about ferrets, was " The Complete Book of Ferrets " by Val Porter and Nick Brown. Pelham Press. Try the Bay ;-)

Enjoy ye ferrets. Brilliant little creatures.

The fact that we are living and breathing and able to do all these things. The fact that we are not rocks and some divine coincidence made use who we are instead of some inorganic atom. The fact we can give things worth. We can categorise. Its all beautiful, the sight, the sound, the feel, the emotion, the taste. Even pain. We can feel that not many other things can. Pain may be painful, but we can feel it just as we can feel happy. Its amazing really that out of all of this we can do these things. Although it seems to suck sometimes its still wonderful. random fact: if you shoot a rabbit, it doesnt know why it feels pain, it doesn't register that there is an explanation, it just knows it feels pain and as a reaction will run away, even if its dying. Shoot a human (even if they did not know what a gun was) it would realise its something launched, have some sort or knowledge of what to do and so on. I dont think this was relevant but its written now... But if youre looking for one reason it would definitely be pie.

yehuh the cage has to be in a run- my friends live in what was actually a flat pack dog run with a hutch inside. It needs at least a decent size rabbit run.
You can put bits of large pipe and flowerpots in for them to play in.

tip : give them a raw egg cracked into a food dish- they lick it up and love it- close their little eyes - soooooo sweet!

yeah but make sure thay have plenty of toys and hiding places and nesting spots, and make sure there is absolutely no way they can get out because ferrets are very tricky and they are houdinis, escape artists.
