why do people stand still on escalators?

Many people like our grandmother use the escalator because she can't walk up the stairs. She has to stand on an escalator. When she does everyone behind her must too.

I give the benefit of the doubt to people. Escalators are there so you don't have to walk up.

It amazes me how many people just say "lazy".

Escalators are intended for two sorts of travellers: Walkers and standers. Escalator etiquette is that people who wish to stand are supposed to stand to the right. The left side of the escalator is meant for walkers who wish to pass by... like a passing lane while driving.

I don't know if you'd call it a source... but I live outside of DC and this is just life using the Metro. Standers stay to the right and folks about to miss a train or bus are vaulting up and down the steps to the left of them - lol

People don't walk on stairs because they're too busy doing nothing to put the effort in to it. They may be lazy or pre-occupied with what ever they may be doing (or not doing). I only hope that they stay to the right or the left so that i may walk past them.

But some people actually walk up the escalator.
