Hi, my name is Hank. I never realized there are so many people who won't use a simple function button to check their spelling. I was taught that spelling is a critical part of communication. Don't pull the easy cop-out that I'm an elitist either. There is absolutely no reason to not use the spell check. Well, there is one reason--laziness.

I called a person on their spelling the other day, and he/she tried to come back with satire, which was nothing more than veiled anger, at me, for calling him/her on dropping an l in collapsed.

I wrote the person, and told him/her a short, but true, story why spelling was so critical, and all the person did was come back at me, trying to justify his/her error, of not spell checking, by trying to be satirical. All he/she did was prove how asinine some people can be. It is so easy to point and click--that I just don't understand why people wouldn't use it (spell check).

Because, as a society, we have become SO lazy. With computer shorthand, kids have not learned how to spell and don't want to take the time to hit a button. I teach high school, and these kids write the same way. Thanks for pointing out my pet-peeve on this site.

I occasionally use spell check, but have found it to be a nuisance at times. There are words that are not in the spell check dictionary like "Google". The last time I used spell check on an answer everything come back okay then I went on and posted my answer. When I read my answer after posting I realized spell check had let a word go through that was spelled correctly and then again wasn't. I had meant to write "please" but had inadvertently dropped the "e" so it was "pleas". You can see the problem. For me the above reason and the fact that I am quite confident, (ego), with my spelling, is the main reason I do not use spell check, I know I should more because I tend to get "happy fingers" when I type.
Additionally I have found quite a few people on here that use English as a second language and have a problem with spelling and try to spell phonetically which also creates a problem for the spell check dictionary.
Then there are those that use the "text message" or "IM" format to ask and answer questions. Those I find irritating. But in the long run, I take into account that there are people of all backgrounds and educational levels, (not to mention the fallibility of spell check), utilizing this forum. With that in mind the incorrect spelling is tolerable and I choose not to be anal about it. This is not a school of journalism, it is an open forum for and exchange of ideas and information. As long as the answers follow the spirit of the question and are not rude, I can forgive spelling mistakes. Hey we all make mistakes and so does the "robot" spell check.

Must be first to answer, so I cannot take the time to use spell check or even see that the grammar is in place, so I don't come across like a low-grade moron.

Also, most people here have zero sense of humor and irony.

Well if you must know, most 12 year olds know they can spell perfectly so they don't feel the need for spell check. I'd also guess that some are from out of the country and don't understand english well.

There are some people on here that are not literate, some that are not computer literate, some that are lazy, and some that just do not care. Everyone make mistakes.

I am not an English major. So as long as I can read what is being written, I really don't care. Because I have a LIFE!!

People don't like to be criticized. I am sure you don't either. No one likes to have their mistakes pointed out, it makes them feel stupid. That is one major reason why they try to justify it. I think it's better to learn and grow but that's just me. Besides, correct spelling without correct grammer is useless.

Crossing levels in hurry leads to mistakes, there is no time and also there is no fine for that. People are in hurry to score more with the minimum available time.
Other view may be they are not familiar with the English language

Because people are lazy and ignorant. I posted a similar question last week. Most of the answers I got were defensive and rude.

Did it ever occur to you that if the person couldn't spell the word correctly when typing it, he/she would not recognize the correct spelling when using the spell checker?
