The system needs a few tweaks. Letting fans vote 25 times is absolutely bogus. ONE vote per email address; if you want to vote more than get to the ballpark and vote there.
Fans should vote for the starting pitcher also; they don't vote for pitchers at all right now.
And, when the game is in an AL park, don't elect a DH.
Now, to clear up some misinformation that's been posted here:
- Rodriguez is the starter at catcher, not Varitek. Although Mauer should have been the starter.
- Players DO have their own vote; actually the managers have a lot less say in it than they used to. If the players elect a different person thant he fans, the fans' vote starts but the players' pick also goes. That is why Robinson Cano and Alex Rios are on the team even though they are on the DL; they did not win the fan vote but they won the player vote. (sorry Mr. 225 votes)

I totally agree with you. It's time to return to having the players from each league selecting who will represent them at the All Star game. The fans stuff the ballot boxes, and in large cities like New York and Los Angeles, they have an advantage.
I agree that Mauer should get the nod as I feel Lowell from the Red Sox should start at 3rd base this year. He has been overlooked, and that is a shame.
AND, I am a Red Sox fan!!

I don't like the present system at all. Both the fans and the mgrs. have too much clout in picking the team. It's simply a popularity contest for the fans, which dilutes the teams. Allowing the mgrs. so much input is a joke. C'mon, 6 White Sox? Let the players determine who's on the team. And, enough with this stuff about mandating that each MLB team MUST have at least one representative on the team. There are years (like this one) when really deserving players are left off because of that rule.

Oh Boo-hoo. Hey if you want to vote by stastics go for it but the rest of us will vote mostly for our team or favorite players. Hey why is Freddy Sanchez only in reserves and listed as the second in reserves if we are just going by those stats. Even by the winning side getting the home-field advantage it really doesn't mean anything. After all the N.L. hasn't been winning lately even when they win the World Series. These aren't TEAMS these are collection of players. If you go by interleague play it is clear the AL would win, which means if the NL wins it is even clearer how little this game really shows. Now garbage is more of how EVERY TEAM has to be represented, even if they don't have a player that is worthy.

The all star team should be (AL)
C- Mauer
1B- Ortiz (everyone who's got a problem, try facing him in the bottom of the ninth, or any time for that matter)
2B- Mark Loretta
3B- Alex Rodriguez
SS- Miguel Tejada
OF-Manny Ramirez
OF- Ichiro
OF- Vernon Wells
SP-Jose Contreras (Ozzie was biased with the wrong guy!)
RP- Jonathan Papelbon
i only did the starters, because...........i felt like it
And why are you all talking about Pudge rodriguez, VARITEK IS THE STARTER

its crap. i used to not give a crap since it was just an exhibition for the fans enjoyment so they should vote for who they wanna see. but now that the game decides who gets home field advantage in the world series the vote should be by managers or possibly baseball writers. the other thing thats crap is that every team needs to be represented -bull **** - if your team sucks and doesnt have anybody good enough to be there on their own merit than tough ****. i think the biggest mistakes were mauer not being voted the starter and liriano and verlander not making it.

It's more of a popularity contest - the most popular players get elected. While a few are deserving, if you want the real All-Stars, see who the managers have picked for reserves. Too many players get voted in by reputation when they haven't done diddly. Return the selection process to the players and managers.

It is pretty flawed. The teams with the most fans get the most players on the team..(Boston & New York). Each fan is to get 25 votes. But withh online voting, you get 25 votes for each email address.. I personally voted 225 times! Alex Rios made it so I got what I wanted.
