i just finished watching superman returns and i can't see why they didn't create a new image for him like they did with batman. and what's up with the cape? what possible utility could the cape serve to this guy who is basically indestructible?

They did change the costume like in Batman. Reexamine the colors and materials used.

As for the cape, they didn't remove it because it is part of the DC image.

As for the utility of a cape it serves as a distraction. When you are moving it prevents your foe from accurately judging your speed. When you are standing still it conceals what you may have under the cape.

Not to mention he's walking around with his underwear on the outside of his pant. Why are are you worried about his cape?

That is the way Martha Kent, his earth mom, made the costume out of the blankets he was wrapped in when he arrived on Earth in his rocket. She probably made it for protection for him, not realizing at the time, that he really wouldn't need it for that reason. What upsets me about the cape in the new movie is that they didn't ad the "S" emblem to it. It should have been
there. Also, in some of the older comics, it was explained that when he changes from Kent to Superman, he uses his strenghth to flatten his Kent clothes and puts them into a secret pocket which is located on the inside of the cape. So that is another reason for the cape.

the cape is as indestructable as him so he can cover other people in it and protect them also capes are just cool. like a long jacket or anything that moves in the wind

Actually, his entire costume was made from the swaddling clothes he arrived at this planet with.
His mom, Martha Kent, probably made the costume for him and made the cape to help him when he first started to learn to fly.
Other than that, it's probably just sentimental value.

It makes him looks sexy, and covers his butt. And his earth mom made the costume for him so it won't be right if he didn't ware the whole suite for all that long time of hours she spent on it.

His mom made it for him so she would nag forever and remind him of the 99 hours of labor if he didn't wear it or wore a new one
