I make my own for the steam cleaner I bought using a capful of clothes washing detergent (liquid), 1/4 orange pine-sol and water. I also sometimes use Lysol cleaner instead of pine-sol, in the brown bottle, because it kills germs, and we have pets. Put the two ingredients into a gallon of water. And to make it smell really good, I sometimes just use Febreeze, a regular sized spray bottle poured into a gallon of water. That's to freshen up the carpet.

It is best to use the commercial carpet cleaners that are made by manufacturers. There are many reasons for so. One, being that the instructions tell you exactly how much water to mix with the chemical to get maximum effort on the carpet. If you use too much, you will ruin the carpet fibers and if you use too little the dirt won't come out which will cause abrasion and ruin the carpet. Second, by mixing chemicals together, you could cause a bad burn or even worse explosion.
Bottom line, buy the commercial brands.
I earned a certified carpet cleaner license for the state of Ohio when I used to live there. Someone brought this question up in our training and the instructor had 30 years in the industry. The answer I gave you is what he said.
