I wonder how you all would feel if youre watching a movie in a theater, no ads before the screening, but as the action really heats up, they cut to a commercial THEN. Regular commercial breaks IN MOVIES? Never happen? Well just remember you read it here first.
Theater owners dont make a dime off the movie itself, at best they break even. The old saying goes, "Movie for show, popcorn for dough." The only profits come from the concession stands. But youre right... who in their right mind is gonna pay $6.50 for lousy stake popcorn? So the theater owners make money by selling advertising space. This, of course, totally turns the movie-going public off and fewer people go to the theater to watch first run movies, especially older people. Eventually they will try "during the movie" commercials and this will be the death of movie theaters in this country.

Yes..It's time for some changes. This has been brought up in some Cities. Some theatres advertise a movie 'start' time of 1:00...Then there are 10 minutes of previews, a no cell phone PSA, ad for the refreshments, on and on ad infinitum. For the price of a movie nowadays, and the expensive popcorn and candy at a theatre, no wonder more and more are just renting DVD's!! I pay to see a movie, NOT ADS and PREVIEWS.

i wish i can ring the theatre owners by the neck, i just talk to a friend about this yesterday! i don't understand not only do we watch advertisements but we have to pay outrageous fees for snacks which alone can make a theatre a large amount of profit! but having to have us moviegoers sit down for 10 minutes watching commercials and then another 10 minutes of previews is ridiculus! i totally agree with you on this issue! there ought to be a law! Movie theatres must be run by Microsoft another company playing Monopoly!

I thought the exact same thing the other day when I went to the movies. There were 6 commercials and I kept thinking, why did I have to pay $4.75 for my popcorn if they're being paid by these commercials?
I notice a lot of people don't buy refreshments anymore. If they would bring down the prices, I bet people would start buying them again.
I like the previews. I don't want them to go away.

I guess you can be productive next time. Heres a list of things you can accomplish the next time the ads begin to roll out: go to the washroom, make some final phone calls, pick up something to eat, plan what to do after the movie is finished, strecth your legs, or just close your eyes for a few minutes (staring at a screen for long hours may cause eye sores).

The Hollywood movie industry, they are garanteed to have your attention before a film, so people are keen to advertise before, its all part of living in a western society.
Its immoral but think about the thousands of adverts you see each day just walking around town, let alone on tv. So why not expect it at the cinema.
Even at my local arthouse cinema i have to sit through adverts! Itsa the way cinemas make more money, at least this way they can afford to show more films!

Not much the public can do. They are making more and more money with it that is why they do it. I know, it is super sad that they do that.
You are paying for the movie and since advertising companies know you are sitting waiting for the movie to run, they play their ad....makes them moneY!

The film industry is whoring you and exploiting you. It is terrible, but they know as long as you want to go see the show, you will see those. If people stop seeing shows in theaters, they wouldn't be able to do that anymore.
RENT DVDs. It is quicker and easier, and your feet don't get stuck to the floor.

Because you won't pay 4.00 for a drink, 4.00 for a popcorn and 4.00 for a candy, and since you don't they need to make up the lost revenue by selling more ads.
