You are not going to avoid the mountains.....Sorry! By the way you are going to enjoy seeing the mountains. They are beautiful. I live in WV and travel to Durham, NC frequently (sis lives there). It is not all that bad.....Trust me you will enjoy the Appalachia's! Here is another route you could take if you come thru WV: In WV take I-64 East toward Charleston, WV. In Charleston take I-77 South toward Bluefield, WV (travel about 110 miles) then look for exit 101 onto I-74 East toward Mount Airy, NC (travel about 10 miles) then merge onto US 52 South (travel about 30 miles) to Winston-Salem, NC. There you will look for Exit 107 A onto I-40 East to Greensboro, NC (travel about 60 miles). You will start seeing some exit signs to Chapel Hill, NC. After that you take I-85 North. On I-85 North you will be in Durham, NC!!! And like I said you will not avoid any mountains.....You are going to see some beautiful scenery! One more thing.....Be careful on the WV Turnpike.....It is curvy.....And have $1.25 ready because you have to go thru 3 toll booths on the turnpike as well. Oh yeah....you will get to go thru 2 tunnels also....Both in WV....after you go thru the second tunnel (which were built thru mountains) you will enter VA. Watch your speed there.....The cops are everywhere!!! Hope you have a nice trip whatever route you take!!!

Awww..you don't want to miss driving through West Virginia.
My state is beautiful!!! Take I-64 all the way from Huntington to White Sulphur Springs and into Va...then down 220 S to Greensboro and then get directions to Durham. It's a beautiful part of the country.

But why?
I agree with the WVA residents, beautiful, peaceful, and serene driving even on the Interstates.
I am currently working in Huntingdon, WVA right now with trips to Ashville, NC. Awesome scenery, so awesome that I plan on moving near those Mountains soon. But I guess they are not for Flatlanders. Only Alternative might be I80 to NY, NY Thruway to I61 to I95 and then South to NC.

The only way is to go down to Florida and come back north. Too long and a waste of gas. Mountains are there, but are fine. It is an easy drive.
Go Rivermen!
