Well, define animal... I know there are certain animals in different groups, for example Garter Snakes and many other colubrids are oviviparous. Many types of shark as well, will have eggs during embryonic development, yet emerge as a tiny shark and not an egg.

oviparous: Producing eggs that are hatched after being expelled from the body: opposed to ovoviporous – producing eggs which incubate and hatch within the body but without placentas.
Just to clear up which each means...I think people were confusing the two. Birds would be oviparous (egg-birth) and snakes would be ovoviporous (egg-live birth).

The correct spelling is ovoviviparous (ovo = egg). There are many animals that are ovoviviparous. It means simply that the embryo develops inside an egg that is inside the mother.
