I don't hate you, hunny. (",)

I'm American and I don't hate you. There are lots of people who are just mean and nasty and say bad things; it's just that they are not educated enough to understand others, thus they become xenophobes.

There are plenty of good people who don't hate others. Please don't be sad. Don't listen to those people who say bad things; they are just showing their own faults and lack of a proper education.

I like you. =)

I asked my friends this yesterday. I live in France and there are so many assumptions about us here - rich, arrogant... It seems that if England play a competitive sport, so many other countries would support the other side whatever.
Okay, we don't have a history to be proud of - I can see that. We are also an island race and there is a tendancy towards thinking England, and especially London is the centre of the world. I also cringe at the Brits abroad drinking too much and making foreign places like Little England - that's just wrong. However, if you go to England we are generally friendly, there is so much help for non-English-speaking people, we are fascinated by other cultures, we are funny and creative...
I don't expect anyone to automatically like us but everyone should be judged by their own merits, not by where they just happened to be born.

Not everybody hates the English.

Previous answers have overlooked political and economic exploitation of the colonies, particularly those that are now in the "New Commonwealth" by the British establishment. People in those countries are justified in resenting such a past. They need to be assured that the British have changed.

One might comment that throughout the last century Britain's political leaders have come disproportionately frequently from Scotland, as did many of the people who ran the colonies. Many English people are getting fed up at being scapegoated with all the blame for the sins of Great Britain generally: nobody should be treated with such prejudice.

I dont think its the english that people hate but its the yobbos that go abroad and then it gets in the media about drunken tourists and soccar violence. Then other countries start hating the English in General. English speaking people tend to expect other countries to speak to them in English when THEY are abroad so this comes off as arrogant. The thing is that When I was at school we did French and German but I dont think it was made as important as other subjects. I dont know whatt it is like now .
Also there is a lot of History behind this issue as well because Britain once had an empire so some will remember that. The scotts and the welsh and the Irish still hold a grudge against England because of past history. Dont know about Americans but the Aussies still winge about the English , again , that is down to past history. ( A lot but not all people mind you )
I think that if countries could take back everything they do or had done to eachh other they probably would . Most of this hatred or dislike is in the past I think so whyu cant people get over it all and just move on ? If you dont like somebody then just leave them to their business and you to yours. Thats my advice in general
In the end all countries have their good and bad points about their people.

Who's "everyone"? I'm someone and I don't hate the English.

Some British-Isle residents have told me that the English have been bastards through the ages -- in their colonization of, well, a large part of the world, their treatement of the Irish and so on.

Until I heard that I didn't realize there was a difference between the English and the Britons, that the Scotch or Welsh, for example, are different from an Englishman.

I Adore the english, that cold, snobby, elitist attitude! That wonderful perchance for militarily occupying and attempting to degrade a culture is utterly charming.
They chill their bath, warm their beer, once nearly mastered the world yet today cannot to this day figure out central heating. A country where it is every little boys dream to be a queen, they enjoy being beaten with canes (which is exactly what the deserve).
But in all probability they taught hate to the million of my ancestors they intentionally starved to death or forced to leave the mother land. But I do not hate them at all. For hate is an emotion of fire, I wish retribution be served as cold as their own hearts.
Problem with the Scots now Eh? Good!

Who ever gave you an idea that everyone hates English. Whole of China are learning English for a better future. In many countries around the world you cannot aspire to achieve anything unless you are good at English. I for one love English.

You're mistaken, the English aren't hated, except for by Scottish extremists ;-) We're a respected Nation, and we should be proud of that fact. I'm Proud to be British and am immensely proud of our history and heritage (including the Royal rule) I wouldn't have joined the HM forces otherwise. Granted, we've made mistakes in our past, but we have evolved into a great Nation, and have NOTHING to apologise for in today's world.

I don't think everyone does. But there is something about every community that people are going to dislike and criticise. It's inescapable, living in such an intolerant world. As for the Brits, I think its some kind of post-colonial hangover and probably because they appear as humourless and stuck up. Personally, I think the Brits have an amazing sense of humour. It's actually the Americans I have a problem with... but let's not go there...

Oh, I don't know - a wet cold little island stuck up near the Arctic circle, nobody there can cook, nobody wants to have sex with them (they are weird), invented football but can't play it worth a d*amn, make cars that won't run after the sun goes down, drive on the wrong side of the road, talk really funny, ("owe, rawthur," "eggactley," "aiy do dayclar") etc, etc.

But they did build the largest empire the world has ever known, ruled one quarter of the Earth's area and one quarter of the population. Anglo-Saxon democracy is the most successful form of government on Earth. British justice the fairest. (in France, Mexico, Germany, Italy etc you are guilty until you prove your innocence!)

Oh and everybody on Earth has to learn English if they want to get ANYTHING worthwhile done!

I think that about covers it.
