You gotta make sure the A/C unit still has good ventilation and the leaves and branches from the bushes won't clog it up. Plant them at least 3 feet away. If the A/C unit is ugly, try a privacy fence to screen it from view.

I assume you are trying to put up a screen to hide the unit.
We put lattice work to the front and one side of ours. Come out about a foot or 2 from the unit so it will have good circulation. We also stopped about 10-12" from the ground.

No it is not. The AC units needs to be kept clear in order to have open access for the intake/outtake of air. If you block the vents in the front, you can cause the unit to shut down.

Can you breathe with a blanket over your head? Same thing. Your ac needs easy access to air. Even if you plant sort of close by, you may pay a lot more for expensive AC because your ac is working too hard! Plant AWAY from it.

Go ahead and plant till your hearts content. I have no idea why people answer that don't have a clue.Plant so the leaf growth don't get any closer than 2ft. keep an eye on them and prune as needed. Just remember that if it needs to be serviced the tech. needs to have access to the control cover.

It is a good way to burn your house down, if you hinder ventilation of the a/c unit.
