William Wallace was the reluctant hero who never wanted to be part of history but a simple farmer and landowner. He falls in love with his childhood sweetheart, but his happiness is shortlived when she's murdered by the English because she refused the advances and attempted rape from an English soldier.
In retaliation,Wallace gets revenge for his wifes murder by killing the local lord and starts a rebellion that is felt all the way to London. King Edward I thinking that he can end this rebellion by sending his Northern Army to face the Scots, not realizing that they are more determined than ever to rid themselves of the English from their country.
Wallace comes to realize that he's been duped not only by the English, but from his own countrymen who have accepted King Edwards' bribes to come around to his way of thinking.Wallace falls in love with the Princess of Wales who herself is in a loveless marriage to a homosexual wimp.Betrayal from the Scots and a seething hatred from Edward,Wallace is captured and brought to the Tower of London where he's finally executed in public.
But the death of William Wallace ends up uniting the Scottish clans instead of dispersing them as Edward had hoped. At the end of the movie, the English think they're going to have an indentured Scottish king who will follow his orders as he's given them, but the Scots end up fighting the English and win their freedom.

The "REAL" story - or what the movie was about?

Well either way here goes:
The Scots want their freedom. The English won't give it to them. The Scots, lead by Wallace, fight allot of battles. And he dies - crying out, "FREEDOM!".

However, the fight for Scottish freedom was not finished until the 20th Century. Hope this helps.
