FOR THE THIRD TIME
The third epic achievement came at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. The group games in Vigo did not augur well. Draws with Poland, Peru and Cameroon put Italy through to the second round amid widespread scepticism. However, they won through to the semi-final against Poland after beating Argentina and Brazil. Paolo Rossi was sensational, as were Bruno Conti, Cabrini, Tardelli and the legendary Zoff, Italy's captain. In the Spanish nights, the goalkeeper was more like a youngster than a man over 40. The 3-1 win over West Germany in the final was just incredible, and it went straight into footballing history while the fans celebrated a team of true champions.
At the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Italy started off as favourites. However, a number of problems, not least the climate and high altitude, prevented Italy from living up to expectations. Italy made it through to the last sixteen, but went down 2-0 against France and headed home.
