We saw a raccoon in our backyard during a pool party yesterday, around noon. Aren't they nocturnal? After we all went inside, a friend suggested it was rabid. Should we call animal control?

Raccoons can have a wide variety of problems that can cause odd behavior, not just rabies. Just because you saw it during the day does not mean it is sick at all though. Like the previous answers have stated, it could just be out looking for food, they aren't always out only at night.

Raccoons are known to carry distemper. This can cause them to act abnormally, but is not dangerous to humans at all.

If the raccoon comes back and seems sick, stumbling, breathing hard, runny eyes, etc... call your local wildlife sanctuary and ask questions about what you should do. They usually have some great suggestions.

Good luck!

They are not always nocturnal. Raccoons are a very adaptive breed of animals that have taken to city living.
Just because you saw one in the yard does not mean that it is rabid, although its best to assume they all are for safety purposes as they can carry the disease without showing signs of it.
Raccoons are scavengers and do prefer night, but they are known to be out all day and night.

Raccoons are normally nocturnal but they are opportunists. If someone is feeding them they will all too gladly change their schedule for a free handout. My Grandmother has been feeding wild raccoons and other animals on her front porch every morning for years. If you have a bird feeder he may have come for the seeds, also you may soon want to invest in a new trash can with a very tight lid.

Perhaps, they are a nocturnal animal, however, depending on the environment around them, they may need to go out during the day to try and find food for babies this time of year. Best to leave them alone in any case as they are a wild animal. I would call animal control if you see it again.

Climb up onto your roof and start up up blasting away at despite is on your chimney with a shotgun. If that would not artwork, you need to circulate on your interior of sight ironmongery shop (gun keep) and get some dynamite to drop down in there. The latter suggestion ought to no longer be conducent to the integrity of mentioned chimney.

That is unusual yes, but I'm not sure if it warranted a call to animal control. If it is stumbling about, or foaming at the mouth, then definitely get everyone into the house, and call the authorities.

not necessarily......

it may have been attracted to the smell of food.....it may be used to being fed by people.....it may even be someones " pet "......

yes, they are nocturnal......but, unless the raccoon is exhibiting unusual behavior,,,or overly aggressive...there's no need to automatically assume it's rabid
