Oh, women have them too. Just finer (well. some of us have them finer, some need shaving all right). I think it has several reasons, including (but probably not limited to):
- men were supposed to be protectors, and men with beard and moustache looked more scary
- women chose for breeding the men that looked best, and before shaving became popular, I would guess that included nice - bearded men
- women are supposed to be nice and gentle, and the women who men chose for breeding were ones with less facial hair. So that their faces were better visible. And less itchy.

I don't know, these may be peripheral and non-sensical, but they may be among the actual reasons.

Men are not the only ones exclusive to facial hair. Usually, Hispanic, Mediterranean and some European women have facial hair.

Testosterone causes more predominant body hair growth. Woman have testosterone as well, so if a woman were to have an excess of testosterone, she very well could have facial hair.
