Frank Harris invented the first navigational time machine. He worked all his life on it with very little reward and appreciation. On the end he reduced his time machine into a wrist watch and we still use the same idea to day.

yeah, there's a good book by HG Wells, The Time Traveler. The time machine in it sounds really cool.

There's a good general reference called (no kidding) "How to Build a Time Machine" It explains the theory behind time travel, and what you'd have to do to make it happen. Check your local library.
