In the short term, your heart beats faster. In the long term, as you become more fit, your blood cells are able to carry more oxygen with them and your heart will not have to beat so fast, allowing you to exercise longer or harder. That is why someone that is very aerobically fit, such as Lance Armstrong, has such a low pulse rate both at rest and exertion - his blood carries more oxygen per unit volume.
