First of all let me tell you that every nation has its own heroes and I think that everyone considers them great!
But I will vote for Alexander!!
It is not objective of course since I am Greek. But let me explain and see if I can convince you!
Alexander {Greek “ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ” (ALEXANDROS)} is considered the greatest hero of Greece. He succeed many things were others failed before him! He never lost a battle and he is considered a military genius.
He continued his father work making his small Greek kingdom of Macedon the most powerful Greek state and he united all the Greek states under his hegemony.
He crashed the most powerful military force of his time (the Persian Empire) and he replaces it with a gigantic Greek Empire which expanded from Greece to India (really big!!). It is true as my friend Tissaphernes has mention that he used the infrastructure of the Persian Empire but he based the new empire on Greek culture and Greek civilization!
But he dint just force people to accept Greek culture, but he fused Greek culture with Asian Elements forming the culture that was called Hellenistic (from “Hellenic” meaning “Greek”).
He was considered from the people of the Persian Empire as a liberator and not a conqueror.
His continues spread of Greek language and Greek culture through out the world paved the way to Christianity.
I think that all these makes Alexander (ALEXANDROS) the greatest hero!
But don’t forget that it is always a matter of personal opinion!
{Do not confuse the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia or Macedon with the modern state of Makedonija (or FYROM or Slav Macedonia as they are not related at all). The confusion has started a few years ago because that small state started to use the name “Republic of Macedonia” causing a great confusion with real Macedonia in Greece.}

I like Arthur, too, but not because he was a warrior--there are only 5 battles that can definitely be traced to him from the early accounts. Alexander the Great was probably the greatest strategist--he never lost a battle, even against armies 10 times the size of his own. But if you want the warrior who conquered the most territory, you'd have to go with Genghis Kahn. He started in Mongolia, conquered the steppes of Asia, and even made it to Eastern Europe. No one else has conquered more territory.

Well, contrary to my screen name, I would have to side almost with Grendle. However, I would put forth Adolf Galland. German, not Nazi German, ace with 103 confirmed kills mostly on the western front. Was promoted to general of the fighters. Flew with a plane nose art of Mickey Mouse and a cigar tray in the cockpit. Tried to keep fighter pilots in reserve. Last shot down flying an Me 262.

Hans-Ulrich Rudel, Stuka Pilot in WWII, had seven planes shot from under him, logged hundreds of confirmed kills, lost a leg and kept flying, once carried a downed comrade on his back across a frozen river to get back to his own lines, survived the war and helped to found the Argentine Air Force ... a truly remarkable man.

Ajax the Lesser from homer's Iliad. If your brother was better than you at absolutely everything to the point that your parents named you "the lesser" and he "the greater" you would have to be one heck of a warrior just to be in the same room as him, let alone go fight the greatest battle of your life by his side. I really respect this guy.

Hands down Genghis Khan.

Created and ruled an empire that was far greater than the Romans both in scale and population. And didn't need to be a despot to hold his empire together.
