While we're mentioning websites, poke around http://www.yelp.com http://www.craigslist.org http://www.chowhound.com http://www.mistersf.com http://www.sfstation.com http://www.sfvisitor.org and http://www.jdvhospitality.com/thingstodo/. You might have to dig a little but all these sites have excellent recommendations.

If you have a couple weeks that's enough time to explore the city at a leisurely place -- so just wander by foot, bike, public transit, tour bus, ferry, etc. If you're staying at a hotel then ask the staff and concierge, or just meet people and talk. People are pretty approachable.

A few things you might not think about and/or require advance planning include the tour of Alcatraz, a side trip to Yosemite and/or wine country (Santa Cruz, Sonoma, and Napa are all great), riding on the ferry, the saturday farmer's market at the Ferry Building, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge (a must-do in life), a play or musical, and dinner at one of the great restaurants (Chez Panisse, French Laundry, Gary Danko, etc.)

There are also quite a few great, free walking tours put on every week by volunteers. See http://www.sfcityguides.org/.

Go to the cities website and check out the listed points of interest. Or go to a bookstore and pick up Frommer's edition of San Francisco. It will list the best places to stay, eat, and see.
