How to Play the Piano

Want to play the piano? It is a classical instrument and playing it is a wonderful skill to master. This page will guide you no matter what your skill level.
Steps

1. If you are below eighteen, tell your parents that you are interested in playing the piano. Hopefully, they will arrange some piano lessons for you.
2. Once you start playing, practice every day if you can for at least thirty minutes, if not more. Your fingers will "rust" if you do not play for even a week.
3. Always warm up at the beginning of every practice session with scales, warm-up exercises, relatively easy pieces, etc. Stretching your fingers and hands never hurts either.
4. When your teacher asks you to learn a hard piece, do it. It will make you such a better piano player.
5. Never give up. The fingering, speed, and chords in some pieces may be frustrating and difficult, but push through it.

Tips

* The more you practice, the better you will perform.
* If you are shy, you may want to work on self-esteem and practice playing in front of your family and friends.
* Theory is the best way to become a great jazz musician and the earlier you start, the better you become.
* Always follow the fingering on the piece (there are certain exceptions). This will cause you to play smoothly because you won't have to pause now and then to adjust your hand position because of bad fingering.
* Practice sightreading often because it will help you learn a piece faster and give you more time to work on the dynamics, rhythm, etc.
* Hand and body posture are very important. Slouching gives a bad impression and having a bad hand posture will be counter-productive to your practice.
* Listen to your notes and tune your ears to the keys' pitches. This is needed on some advanced piano tests and will allow you to impress your friends by playing blindfolded!

Warnings

* Don't slack off. Sometimes it may become tedious, but keep practicing.
* Don't be nervous at recitals. Just play your piece.

Things You'll Need

* A piano (Hopefully not electronic, because they are very different than real pianos, thus decreasing your skill and familiarity with a grand piano).
* Hands.
* Feet (for the pedals).
* Chair (preferably one especially designed for a piano).
* Lessons.
