Unless you have major food allergies in your family, there are *no* foods you need to avoid. It would really help to avoid food *additives* and pollutants, but that's not really the same thing...

You Should Avoid Caffeine
Caffeine taken during pregnancy is thought to increase the probability of a child contracting diabetes. See also this article about coffee and tea.
You Should Avoid Fish
Fish concentrate methylmercury, which is known to affect the developing child's brain.
You Should Not Eat Junk Food
The basic problem with junk food is that it fills you up but does not provide vitamins or protein. As your stomach size decreases during pregnancy, junk food takes up room and prevents you from eating the foods you really need for your and your baby's health.
You Should Avoid Vitamin A Supplements
By consuming as little as 4 times the RDA of vitamin A, you greatly increase the risk of having a baby with birth defects or other problems. Exposure during the first trimester is the worst. Natural sources of vitamin A are OK - it is foods that are artifically supplemented that cause the problem, and most foods are. You need to start reading packages to make sure you are not getting too much Vitamin A. Other fat-soluable vitamins such as D,E, and K can also accumulate in the body organs and tissues and high-dosage supplementation should be discussed with your doctor
You Should Avoid Uncooked Meat.

I dont agree with some of these answers. First of all i ate junk food and drank pop all the time when i was pregnant and i have a healthy 6 month old son. I did hear you should avoid tuna fish though. Basically I ate what i wanted and my son turned out perfectly healthy.

Fish that contains high levels of mercury, like King Mackerel, Tuna, etc. Cold cuts and bacon because of the sodium nitrates. Chinese food because of the MSG. Stay away from junk food because all it's going to do is make you fat, there's no nutrition for the baby. Anything that has a lot of chemical stuff like Red Dye #40.
Do eat what you crave if it's healthy. I ate a lot of Breyer's Ice Cream. YUM!!!!!

soft cheeses, certain seafoods, very salty foods, junk food should be eating every once in awhile, no need to stop pleasing urself. very sugary foods, fried or greasy foods, spicy foods, foods with lots of calories and empty calories. increase ur water intake by 20 folds til ur pee is always a lemon color, not an apple juice color. that is a clear case sign of how hydrated u are, which water is the key to helping ur ligaments stretch, helping ur blood flow and volume increase, and removing all the imparities out of ur body thru ur kidneys since u will have alot due to carrying two peoples waste out of u.
eggs and milk should be eatn/drunk atleast everyday. calcium so ur baby gets enough so it wont be taken out of ur own bones and the protein from eggs is essential for brain growth.

I am sure there is a long long list somewhere, but I know you should avoid nuts, liver, undercooked eggs, soft un-pasteurized cheese and sushi & sashimi (the one with raw fish, california rolls should be fine).

FRIED FOODS!!!
Raw meat such as sushi, seafood, or rare/undercooked beef or poultry, because of the risk of contamination with coliform bacteria, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella.
Raw eggs, or foods containing raw egg, such as Caesar dressing, mayonnaise, homemade ice cream or custard, unpasteurized eggnog, or Hollandaise sauce, because raw eggs may be contaminated with salmonella.
Soft cheese such as blue cheese, feta, Brie, Camembert, and Latin-American soft white cheeses such as queso blanco and queso fresco, because they may harbor harmful bacteria.
Fish containing accumulated levels of mercury in their fatty tissues such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. When a pregnant woman consumes large amounts of mercury, her baby may suffer brain damage resulting in developmental delays (for example, delays in learning to walk or talk).
Fish containing high levels of an industrial pollutant called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in their fatty tissues such as bluefish and striped bass, and freshwater fish such as salmon, pike, trout, and walleye from contaminated lakes and rivers. According to the March of Dimes, consumption of large amounts of PCBs by pregnant women is linked to decreased attention, memory, and IQ in their babies. Check with your local Health Department to determine which fish in your area are safe to eat.

The best thing to do is ask your obstetrician...you DO have one, right?? The most important thing you can do for you and especially your baby right now is prenatal care.
