You see adverts for cillit-bang where a 1p gets dipped in their solution and it comes out clean, but does it work and is there an alternative?

Coca-Cola strips coins to their shiny new selves (imagine what it does to human insides!). I wouldn't try it with really old coins though because I'm not sure of their makeup.

(Someone says Coca-Cola doesn't work... I left a coin in coke overnight and it came up shiny new...)

I DO get good results from Cillit BANG -- a cleaning fluid available in the UK: it is made by a division of Reckitt & Coleman who make (among other things) mustard available round the world -- so maybe THIS product is, as well. You can find it on the web at http://www.cillitbang.co.uk/.
White spirit and meths both seem to be good (and a lot cheaper) but take much longer and also smell up the place.
In my own experience white vinegar is not strong enough for all coins, and the said properties of Coca-Cola to dissolve gunge are (in my experience) TOTALLY FICTITIOUS! (The rumour arises from an old "urban legend" that a nail in Coca-Cola would disappear overnight, with the implication that it can be disastrous to the human body).

Cillit Bang works best, why use an alternative? Just ask Barry Scott.

If the coin is Nickel : Vinegar will do.

Copper and Brass: Con. HNO3 is the best.

If it is Gold just pass it to me, I will polish it for you.
