How to say, well there is no real good way to say, "take a hike" but I would just let that person know that, in order to be the best that you can be is at this time in my life you have to make a decision that is best for you at that time. No excuses, no "do you understand" no "crying" none of that can make things change, nor can it band aid a temporary wound. From experience, I'm 44 years old, in a terrible, sick relationship. I have figured out that no matter what I say, how I say it, what I do or don't do will never influence that person to compromise, or listen, or acknowledge my existence can ever change where I need to be.

if you truly loved the person you tell them its over with the same love you had during the relationship,if you can.with a honest explanation and in a place where the person being told could protect his or her dignity when told.
