Depends. Floyd did so many different styles and had so many changes over the years.

For raw comercial value one of the greatest hits compilations is a such as Echoes is a good bet. If you get a greatest hits, Echoes is the one to get unless you dislike mid and late Floyd.

The Wall is more compatable with Alt/Grunge type listeners. It progresses with a story that evolves in each song adding value to even the less inspired songs on the Albumn. The Wall likewise has a movie that storyboards the concepts of the album.

Dark Side of the Moon is the ultimate relax and kick back Album. The songs flow effortlessly into each other and create a stubstantial mood. There is more experimentation and compared to the wall Dark Side is extremely mellow.

Wish you were here is almost a greatest hits of mid Pink Floyd. Pretty much this is the Albumn where Floyd worked most cohesively with each other. The songs roll thorugh very easy on the soul but with edge enough to make you sit up and listen.

Animals is a more experimental Albumn but still very full of good hooks/hits. The experimentation is not drastic like you see on early Floyd Albumns. It is still not top 40 fare either. Has a deffinite edge to it and even gets Bluesy at times.

If you want to listen to some pretty whacked out stuff listen to Umma Gumma. One of the song titles goes something like "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and ..." That gives you exactly an idea what that Albumn is like.

Division Bell and a Momentary lapse of Reason are good New Floyd Albumns. A bit more edge, a little more comercial but still very much Pink Floyd. Division Bell more in line with general Rock where Lapse has some almost Metal moments. Lapse is easily the heaviest Floyd Albumn ever made.

I think you should buy The Dark Side of the Moon, definitely the best album the Floyd ever released. But you could buy any album until The Wall, which is also a good album in its own way. After that, they became dinossaurs... Other good albums of different characteristics and of different epochs: Masters of Rock (if you can find it) gives you a good, aproximate idea of the Floyd's first period before Syd Barrett was dismissed. Ummagumma is an interesting double album. Atom Heart Mother is the Floyd's best attempt at symphonic rock. Wish you were here and Animals are good albums. Then, you have some minor works too, but they're all good until Roger Waters left - not to say that Waters was "the genious" behind Pink Floyd, it's just that there usually is some decaying after a while in every band/musician, although not necessarily and then there are those who make a bad album only to be followed by a good one and so forth - it depends on the need to respect the contracts they have with the record industry at times, too; you can't expect a musician to always be equally inspired, especially when under pressure - we're talking of creative work here. So, my obvious advice would be The Dark Side of the Moon. It's probably the best way to start.

Pink floyd is my favorite band next to the beatles. I would start with Dark Side of The Moon since you are a beginner and then I would move on to Animals. The Wall is awesome but you might not like some of the themes. When you buy Dark Side, i recommend listening to it all in one sitting. I really LOVE Echoes, but there's a chance you might find it boring. An album that is also beautiful but extremely underated is Obscured by Clouds. That, to me is one of their finest works. It's not like the rest of their music, but it's still very Pink Floyd in a cool way.
