I have a large map in gif format. I want to search a particular area in the map which I do by manual search. All that I need is to use ctrl+F (find) command to lessen the hardwork.

How can you have a large map in "gif" format? gif is one of the highest comprehsion formats so will pixilate when blown up. I suggest you search the are on the net and do your research that way, You computer recognises this map as a single image, so wouldn't be able to discern words. You need an OCR Programme, (Optical Character Recognotion) scan. and i doubt if that would read words unless the format was in text of some description. try www.googleearth.com and download the wiindows free version, you can then go to anywhere in the world instantly and see the roof tops and the lay of the land..I'ts awesome actually...enjoy

The kind of software you are looking for is usually called an Optical Character Reconizer (OCR). This is a non trivial problem and as such unless the map is specifically suited for what you are asking for, may not work.

To my wit, you will need to check with computer science deptts in universities to check if they are working on stuff like this. Dont think such a software would be easily available

Text is text the pixels are arranged in a predetermined order. Graphics are made up totally different with no discernible order otherwise they would be called text. You can get text recognition software which might find a text of sorts in a graphic background
