This usually happens after I clean the tank. Are they trying to get extra oxygen or something? They all stay up the top, however one has decided to stay down the bottom of the tank - this one has been looking sick for the past couple of weeks and seems to "rest" at the bottom most of the time... Any help on this please - very unusual that they (5 goldfish in this large tank) are all congregating up the top but look healthy.

Did you use any soap powder or detergent to clean the tank? You are not supposed to! And you should only change 3/4 of the water and not to add too much water as the fish needs to go up and breathe. Do you install any filter in the tank to clean the water of any fish waste, extra fish food, etc? If so, you should also clean the filter of all the waste before putting in fresh water and filter sponge. As for the one that stays at the bottom, why not quarantine it and observe for a few days. Did you overfeed it? Sometimes if you overfeed the fish they can die of heart attack. It's ideal to feed it only once a day and at the same time each day. Also try and check the ph balance of the water. Goldfish are extremely sensitive to the environment. And one last thing, make sure the water you use to change is kept overnight. I had six goldfish before but five died. Now I'm left with only one.

No they probably need more oxygen which they can get at the top of the water. Need to use aged water if possible. There are drops to remove chlorine from the tap water( this you can get at your local pet store) You can treat the water in gallon jugs then after a week change the water see if this helps. Also make sure you have adequate aerator or air pump this aid in the oxygen in the water and filtering .

IDEA >...Sounds like the healthy are staying away from the sick looking one at the bottom.
Talk to an expert ASAP on what possibly is the problem, before the other 4 get sick too.

there is probably more oxygen at the top. how wide is the top of your tank? if you have an old fashioned goldfish bowl where the top is narrower than the middle then you need to change it to get more oxygen into the water

I think that the fish at the bottom of your tank is either old, or doesn't get along with the other fish. the ones at the top are proberly hungry.

They are in trouble, you "cleaned" the tank.. probably chlorine in the water or its ammonia as in new tank syndrome. Add some AmmoLock, Amquel or equivalent. Save the fish!
